Puppy & Kitten Care FAQs

Are you looking for a veterinarian near you in Fort Collins, CO? At Family and Friends Veterinary Care, we offer puppy exam and kitten exam services. Let us go over some of the most commonly asked questions about the kinds of care that puppies and kittens need!

Does My Puppy or Kitten Need Vaccinations?

Yes! Young pets do need to be vaccinated to protect them from diseases. But they need to reach a certain age first! Some of the vaccines your pup may need include:

•           Rabies

•           Distemper

•           Parvovirus

•           Adenovirus-2 or hepatitis

Your kitten might need:

•           Rabies

•           Feline viral rhinotracheitis

•           Feline calicivirus

•           Feline panleukopenia

•           Feline leukemia

What Should I Feed My Young Pet?

Puppies and kittens need the right nutrients in the right amounts to grow and thrive. Look for foods made for growing pets rather than adults. Our vet can let you know how much to feed your new pet. Giving them too much puts them at risk of becoming overweight!

How Often Does My Pet Need an Exam?

We will want to see your puppy or kitten when they’re a few weeks old. When they’re around 6 to 8 weeks, they will get their first vaccines. We will give them booster shots every so often throughout their first year.

What Happens During the Exam?

During these visits, you can expect us to do the following:

•           Physically examine your pet

•           Check for signs of health problems

•           Update vaccinations as needed

•           Provide parasite prevention

•           Perform deworming

We can also go over behavioral issues or discuss nutrition during these appointments.

What Other Care Does My Kitten or Puppy Need?

To stay happy and healthy, they also need the following:

•           Nail trims, baths, and other grooming

•           Playtime for physical and mental stimulation

•           Socialization with other pets and people

•           Obedience training

•           House training or litter box training
